Skip Japan This Year — India’s Cherry Blossom Season Is in Full Swing

Must Read

Travelers longing to experience the beauty of cherry blossoms no longer need to book flights to Tokyo — India’s own blossom season is underway, and it is nothing short of spectacular. Spread across destinations from Himachal Pradesh to Meghalaya, the country offers a remarkable range of flowering experiences that mirror the magic of Japan’s celebrated sakura season. With several of these locations currently at or near peak bloom, now is the perfect moment to make the journey.

The Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh hosts one of India’s most magical blossom experiences, centered around small farming villages where fruit orchards burst into color each spring. Apricot and peach trees display delicate pink blossoms while plum trees erupt in pure white flowers that cover the valley in a fleeting but unforgettable display. The full bloom phase lasts only three to four days, requiring travelers to plan carefully to catch this rare natural event at its most magnificent.

Almora in Uttarakhand is another destination that rewards the well-timed visitor. The Kasar Devi area is known for wild Himalayan cherry and peach blossoms that appear between late February and March, set against the majestic backdrop of Himalayan peaks. Visitors have described the experience of sitting beneath these trees as the petals drift down like snow as one of the most intimate and memorable encounters with nature they have ever had.

Ladakh adds a unique cultural dimension to its blossom season, with the famous Apricot Blossom Festival drawing visitors to areas including Leh, Nubra Valley, and Sham Valley in mid-April to early May. Local photography enthusiasts point out that the microclimate of villages like Turtuk causes blossoms to appear earlier than in central Leh, giving visitors a wider window for viewing. The festival celebrates not only the flowers but also traditional Ladakhi homes, organic apricot farming, and the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Shillong stands apart from all other blossom destinations in India by hosting its cherry blossom festival in November, when the rest of the world’s blossom seasons are long over. The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is India’s only autumn cherry blossom event, blending natural beauty with music, art, and cultural celebration. Walking through the blooming lanes of Upper Shillong during this period is described by visitors as a dreamlike experience — a fleeting pink autumn that lingers in the memory long after the petals have fallen.
