Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is under mounting pressure to reinstate Mykhailo Fedorov as defence minister, as protests persist across the country in response to his dismissal. Zelenskyy’s recent decision to replace the Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi has failed to quell public unrest. Although Fedorov was offered the position of deputy prime minister, he has declined, stating that he is committed to returning as defence minister to advance his plans for modernizing and reforming Ukraine’s military forces.
Currently, the defence ministry is temporarily led by special forces commander Yevhenii Khmara, leaving little room for Fedorov’s reinstatement without another change in leadership. Protest organizers in Kyiv have announced plans for additional demonstrations, vowing to continue their efforts until Fedorov is back in his former role. This political impasse has raised concerns that the crisis could drag on into a second week.
Amid these domestic challenges, Ukraine has stepped up its military campaign against Russia with drone strikes targeting military and economic sites within Russian borders. The newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi has been given the mandate to expand offensive operations, enhance military capabilities, develop new technologies, and increase activities behind enemy lines. Drapatyi’s appointment has garnered support from various Ukrainian political and military circles, who commend him as a seasoned and competent leader.
Nonetheless, Drapatyi faces significant challenges, including the potential for increased Russian troop mobilization in the coming months. The leadership changes in Ukraine’s military strategy arise from disagreements between Fedorov, who champions rapid technological modernization, and the previous military leadership, which preferred a more conventional approach. Despite these internal shifts, Russia has dismissed the leadership reshuffle, asserting that it will not impact the battlefield and that its military operations will continue unabated.
