Hungary and the European Commission have finalized an agreement that will release billions of euros in previously withheld European Union funds, contingent upon Hungary’s commitment to executing a range of reforms. This milestone comes as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledges Hungary’s efforts to address issues related to transparency, governance, and the management of EU funds. The proposed reforms include bolstering anti-corruption measures, improving oversight systems, and Hungary’s anticipated participation in the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Under this agreement, Hungary stands to gain substantial funding aimed at bolstering various sectors, including infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development. Additional financial support is foreseen, contingent upon the implementation of further reforms, particularly in higher education and academic governance. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar highlighted that the agreement encompasses a total of €16.2 billion in EU funding, which he views as a pivotal boost to the nation’s economic growth and investment strategies.
Moreover, this agreement facilitates Hungarian students’ full reintegration into the Erasmus exchange program starting from the next academic year, marking a positive step in educational collaboration. However, migration policy remains a contentious topic in ongoing discussions between Hungary and the EU. Prime Minister Magyar affirmed that while Hungary will uphold its commitment to protecting its borders and enforcing strict measures against illegal migration, it will do so in alignment with its European obligations. He underscored the necessity of safeguarding the EU’s external borders and clarified that Hungary has no intention of establishing migrant camps within its territory.
