Austria is exploring the possibility of joining the GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, a move that could enhance defence and security collaboration with Luxembourg. During a recent visit to Luxembourg, Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes, to bolster bilateral ties in areas such as defence, space, and cybersecurity.
The discussions also involved talks with SES, a satellite operator, about Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 programme. Minister Tanner emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions. She noted that enhanced cooperation in this field could bolster the resilience of state communications and support Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2 is set to offer secure communication services to Luxembourg’s defence sector, the European Union, NATO, and partner countries when it launches in 2029. The project represents a significant step in providing reliable communications infrastructure for defence purposes.
In addition to the satellite project, Austria and Luxembourg signed a letter of intent to deepen collaboration across several defence-related domains, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. While Austria has yet to disclose the financial commitment it might make if it decides to join the GovSat 2 project, the discussions mark a critical step in expanding European defence cooperation.
