The Netherlands is set to join Ukraine in military exercises on European Union soil as part of efforts to prepare for a future peace-support mission, contingent on a ceasefire agreement with Russia. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten announced that the exercises, which are expected to occur in the coming months, will include numerous allied nations and concentrate on logistics and air defense. These drills aim to ready the involved forces for a potential deployment to Ukraine following the establishment of a peace deal.
While the Netherlands has not yet confirmed its specific role in the exercises, its contribution will be decided after operational requests are received from France and the United Kingdom, the countries spearheading the multinational force. This collaboration is a significant step in enhancing the preparedness of European forces for potential peacekeeping roles in Ukraine.
In addition to the military exercises, the Netherlands has partnered with Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, and other European nations in a collaborative effort with Ukraine to develop a new European air defense system. This initiative seeks to create a more cost-effective and efficient missile defense technology capable of safeguarding both Ukrainian and European airspace.
Prime Minister Jetten indicated that the first elements of the new air defense system could be ready for delivery within a year, with more advanced functionalities expected within 18 months. The project aims to lessen Europe’s dependency on the U.S.-manufactured Patriot missile systems, which are currently Ukraine’s main defense against Russia’s repeated ballistic missile threats.
The development and production of these new missile systems will involve European defense companies from the participating countries, as Europe looks to bolster its long-term air defense capabilities. This collaboration underscores a broader commitment among European nations to enhance their defense infrastructure and reduce reliance on external technologies.
