This summer, Europe has experienced severe heatwaves, resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths across the continent. As countries continue to assess the impact, the actual number of heat-related fatalities is anticipated to be significantly higher. Prominent among the affected nations, Germany, France, and Spain collectively report over 25,000 excess deaths attributed to the extreme temperatures.
Germany has been hit particularly hard, with roughly 14,000 heat-related deaths recorded from April to early August. This marks the deadliest summer in Germany’s history of heat records. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat since May, also setting a new grim record for the country. Meanwhile, preliminary data from France indicates about 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, excluding August figures yet to be reported.
Other European countries, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also seen substantial increases in mortality during these heatwaves. The intense heat has driven temperatures above 40°C in large areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records along the way. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and severity of these heat events to climate change.
Identifying heat-related deaths poses challenges, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory issues, rather than directly causing death. As delayed mortality data from August becomes available, experts predict the total number of deaths across Europe will rise, underlining the escalating public health threat posed by more frequent and intense heatwaves.
