During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This support comes amid increasing Russian missile and drone offensives against Ukraine. Canada has pledged C$350 million (US$253 million) through a U.S.-led initiative to enhance Ukraine’s military arsenal, provide training, and deliver other defense assistance.
In addition to military support, Canada has announced C$450 million in loan guarantees aimed at reinforcing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This funding is intended to repair damaged facilities, increase energy storage, and ensure reliable electricity supplies to critical services, such as hospitals. The initiative aims to help Ukraine maintain essential services during a time of heightened conflict.
Moreover, Canada and Ukraine have agreed to pursue a “hundred-year partnership” focused on areas including defense, critical minerals, and energy. This long-term cooperation was solidified through an agreement signed by Carney and Zelenskyy. As part of the military support, Canada will allocate 30% of its new domestic drone production to Ukraine. Zelenskyy highlighted that these drones will be deployed on the battlefield to support Ukrainian forces and safeguard civilians.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting may take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly as efforts continue to revive peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
