In a strategic move to facilitate renewed peace negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated a 72-hour suspension of airstrikes on Kyiv. This pause coincides with the visit of U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow, who are working to reinvigorate peace talks aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin, through spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that this cessation of hostilities is scheduled to start at midnight, aligning with the envoys’ anticipated journey to Kyiv.
The decision for a temporary halt in strikes has also been supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has been vocal about the need for such a measure during the U.S. delegation’s visit. Upon their arrival in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner were greeted by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Their diplomatic mission comes at a time when efforts to end the war have significantly slowed, and combat activities have escalated.
Recently, Russian military operations have intensified, with increased drone and missile attacks targeting Kyiv as well as other Ukrainian urban areas. Concurrently, Ukraine has been conducting its own long-range strikes, aiming at Russian military sites, oil refineries, and other critical infrastructure. This intensification of military action underscores the urgency of the peace talks.
President Zelenskiy highlighted that Russia had executed overnight attacks near Kyiv and the Boryspil international airports, suggesting these were potentially linked to the preparations for the U.S. envoys’ visit to Ukraine. This development underscores the precarious security situation as diplomatic efforts strive to gain traction amidst the relentless conflict.
The latest diplomatic engagement occurs against a backdrop of persistent and heavy fighting, with both sides increasingly resorting to the use of drones and missiles. It remains to be seen whether this temporary cessation of hostilities will pave the way for substantive progress in the peace talks, which have thus far struggled to overcome significant barriers.
