European Leaders Convene with Zelensky at First Carpathian 8 Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has launched the Carpathian 8 Summit, a new regional forum aimed at enhancing cooperation among eight countries, during a gathering in western Ukraine. Held in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast from September 18 to 20, the summit focuses on critical areas such as security, energy, transportation, logistics, and cross-border economic collaboration.

The event drew leaders and representatives from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. Notable attendees included Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Slovakia was represented by a senior foreign ministry official, underscoring the summit’s significance in fostering regional ties.

Economic discussions were a key component of the summit, with approximately 500 business representatives participating. President Zelensky highlighted that investment agreements and projects exceeding €1 billion are in preparation. Nearly 100 projects were showcased by the participating nations, aiming to boost regional economic growth.

Transportation and energy infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, with discussions centered around enhancing regional mobility and expanding trade and investment links across the Carpathian region. These initiatives are poised to strengthen the region’s economic framework and foster greater connectivity.

Poland reiterated its support for Ukraine during the summit, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation. The forum is expected to facilitate closer coordination on Ukraine’s European integration efforts and offer a platform for countries with varying positions on military assistance to Kyiv to collaborate effectively.
