Instagram is working on a new feature with a simple but powerful promise: less interruption and more content. The platform is testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels, which will allow for continuous video playback even when you’re not actively in the app.
This feature is designed to eliminate the stop-and-start nature of mobile multitasking. With PiP, a Reel you are watching can be minimized into a floating window, allowing you to seamlessly switch to other tasks on your device without the video ever pausing. This creates a much more fluid and enjoyable user experience.
The primary benefit for the Instagram ecosystem is increased content consumption. Creators will likely see their watch time metrics improve as viewers are no longer forced to abandon a video to handle a minor distraction. This feature is currently in a limited test and will be optional if released widely.
This focus on a less interrupted experience is also evident in the launch of a new, native iPad app. The app’s optimized layout and navigation reduce friction for tablet users, making it easier and more pleasant to consume the content they love.
